“The Fretless Crossfader” | Breaking Musical Barriers

Hello DJ’s, its been a looooong time since our last post, so here’s to the new year!  *Raises a cold beer bottle* …Cheers!

This post is a draft that I have had sitting around for a good year and never actually posted it, probably lack of time to write a proper story. So here goes the post without all of my extended jabbering.

You all have heard it and have probably taken part of one of those arguments about DJs being musicians and the tools of the DJ being instruments. Are they? Are they not? This issue is constantly debated so I am not going to start another big debate here, just watch and let’s wrap this thing up, ok?!

OK, so it doesn’t have strings, and yes, it needs electricity (unlike a guitar or a piano), but it is one of the best examples I can give of how our trade continues to evolve and the steps that DJ’s supporting the core of our craft will more than likely have to take in the near future in order to outgrow the stale, and at times lame market we stand within (yes, I am talking about you, button pushers!) 😀

I just can’t wait to learn more about this concept and what has happened to it (since 2008 or so?)! I’ll make a post about it when I find out more.

Meanwhile check out more musical badass-ness here:

Novation’s New “DICER” Compact Back-lit Multi-Surface Midi Controller

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Novation. In the studio it has taken me a while to get going with a Novation ReMOTE 37SL Midi Controller which I I’ve yet to figure out completely, its extensive array of menus are somewhat cumbersome to navigate. A latency problem that creates a “creeping” or “progressive” latency effect pretty much renders the whole keyboard section of the controller unusable after a few minutes of turning it on. Weird thing is that it seems as though the faders and knobs work just fine (no latency)!

But let’s put that aside, now take a look at Novation’s new “Dicer”, a combo of two controllers that are Midi mappable to our favorite DJ programs and can be used to control just about any parameter in the software of your choice.

Videos and more after the break…

Music SHORT-KUTS: Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” – The DJ Transition/Edit

Here’s the first in a series of SHORT-KUTS Music posts. As a total Ableton “newb” I decided to finally take my time and give it a try and the results were fantastic in terms of ease of use and speed. Ableton is incredible, bottom line.

Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” was in need of an edit for my DJ sets, so I put it to work along with Afrojack’s dope remix of the same track and made a little tool/transition that anybody can use to move from a slow tempo set, on up to some serious peak hour dance feel, if that suits your mood of course.

It’s like a “shortcut” from 99BPM to 128 BPM.

Bonus: For a shorter version of this transition see the link on the description of this track in my SoundCloud

Video: TRAKTOR’s Controller Domination

You may be asking: “Why aren’t there SHORT-KUTS™ for TRAKTOR yet?”

And there is a simple answer: You won’t have to wait too long. They are coming! Sign up to our mailing list (see bottom of website) or follow us on Twitter/Facebook and you’ll get the update when we are ready to ship.

Meanwhile we’ll wet your appetite with the latest promotional video that the folks at Native Instruments have released onto the masses. You may have already drooled over your keyboard while watching DJ Rafik 2007 World DMC Champ jammin on the latest NI hardware (more on that after the break)…  but this time long time TRAKTOR supporter DJ Craze is back on the NI set with a pair of sweet-ass gold-plated Technics 1200’s, a Pioneer DJM-909, TRAKTOR PRO, and NI’s most recent addition to their line of exceptional DJ hardware: The X1 Performance DJ Controller.

X1 Fun FactJust a couple of weeks ago, while preparing for a performance, a colleague of ours accidentally dropped his brand spanking new X1 from the top of an elevated DJ Booth at a local lounge. He was glad to report that the 7-foot fall only made a tiny ding on one of the corners of X1’s plastic chassis.
