“The Fretless Crossfader” | Breaking Musical Barriers

Hello DJ’s, its been a looooong time since our last post, so here’s to the new year!  *Raises a cold beer bottle* …Cheers!

This post is a draft that I have had sitting around for a good year and never actually posted it, probably lack of time to write a proper story. So here goes the post without all of my extended jabbering.

You all have heard it and have probably taken part of one of those arguments about DJs being musicians and the tools of the DJ being instruments. Are they? Are they not? This issue is constantly debated so I am not going to start another big debate here, just watch and let’s wrap this thing up, ok?!

OK, so it doesn’t have strings, and yes, it needs electricity (unlike a guitar or a piano), but it is one of the best examples I can give of how our trade continues to evolve and the steps that DJ’s supporting the core of our craft will more than likely have to take in the near future in order to outgrow the stale, and at times lame market we stand within (yes, I am talking about you, button pushers!) :-D

I just can’t wait to learn more about this concept and what has happened to it (since 2008 or so?)! I’ll make a post about it when I find out more.

Meanwhile check out more musical badass-ness here:

Music SHORT-KUTS: Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” – The DJ Transition/Edit

Here’s the first in a series of SHORT-KUTS Music posts. As a total Ableton “newb” I decided to finally take my time and give it a try and the results were fantastic in terms of ease of use and speed. Ableton is incredible, bottom line.

Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” was in need of an edit for my DJ sets, so I put it to work along with Afrojack’s dope remix of the same track and made a little tool/transition that anybody can use to move from a slow tempo set, on up to some serious peak hour dance feel, if that suits your mood of course.

It’s like a “shortcut” from 99BPM to 128 BPM.

I have enough things to think about when I am playing out than to remember 100 keystroke commands. Short-Kuts make it possible for ANYONE to be able to perform keystroke short cuts accurately and on the fly. EVERY time I play out I get people asking me, \”those are sick, where did you get those??!!\” I am happy to tell them that I got them from BIS @ Short-Kuts.
